It is wisely said by our prime minister Narendra Modi ji that “Our progress lies in the progress of the nation”. India is a developing nation and has improved rigorously in different field like literacy, information, technology, healthcare, education etc. There are still many fields in which India is lagging behind and one of them is lack of sensitization towards sex education in India. Education is very essential in ones growth and development. Elementary education is compulsory in India and is also provided at free of cost. Looking at the present increase birth rates which is growing day by day due to lack of family planning and unwanted pregnancies, sex education is very essential and much needed in India. There is a vicious cycle of high child mortality and lack of family planning leading to high fertility rates and maternal deaths. This vicious cycle can be broken by lowering child mortality and using family planning. As there is no sex education facility available in India many women especially living in rural areas are not aware of contraceptives or even family planning. The crime rates of rape ,abuse and molestation are increasing in India day by day and studies have shown that sex education helps in preventing above mentioned crimes. There was a girl in Mulund ,Maharashtra who was 17 years old who committed suicide because of unexpected pregnancy and there was a complaint lodged against the underage boy who got her pregnant who was further sent to juvenile. There are tons of cases like this which could be prevented due to sex education because life matters. Studies have shown that there are cases of unwanted pregnancies in India which gives a rise to over population, crowded family due to which their children are deprived of basic amenities and forced to live in poverty. Sex education is defined as a broad program that aims to build strong foundation for lifelong sexual health by acquiring information and attitudes, beliefs and values about one’s identity, relationships and intimacy. Sex Education gives enough knowledge about sexual behavior to keep teens away from sexual abuse or sexual violence. The education motivates youth to make good desired decisions about their sexual partners also helps them to understand all about consent. Sexual health can affect the academic success of students. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that students who are sexually healthy and well aware about their sexual health are more likely to have higher academic grades than those who are often curious, turn to the internet and believe in all the wrongly altered information. Health-related problems and teenage unintended pregnancy can lead to absenteeism and dropping out. Comprehensive sex education programs helps in reducing the rates of sexual activity, sexual risk behaviors, STIs, adolescent pregnancies etc. India has the largest adolescent population in the world that is 250.8 million and every fifth person is 10-19 years which makes sexual education even more essential India. But in India sex education is considered as a taboo. Many schools have received rejections when proposed the idea of sex education as parents, teachers, society thinks it is inappropriate and apprehensive. It is even banned in various states in India. This process of thinking need to change and people should have an open mind towards sex education as it will prepare their own kids mentally and emotionally about the changes a human body goes through in the span of life. Society should not longer passively leave it to streets or the internet to brainwash the kid’s mind with incomplete knowledge and set sexual standard values. As it is harmful for kids and lives a bad impact on young minds. Sex education is a human right, parents have the responsibility to provide them the knowledge and awareness they need to know. It is every human right to know their body. Comprehensive sex education programs can help them understand their sexual and reproductive health which is a very important part of life, which time and time again is neglected by our society due to lack of awareness about sex education. They need to understand and change their process of thinking. As sex education helps in preventing unexpected and unwanted pregnancies ,it helps in preventing Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs),it helps young mind to learn about sex in a very sophisticated manner rather than internet which badly influences their mind, proper sex education helps in reducing sexual
violence, sexual abuse and all crimes like molestation , rape and other related crimes. If education can be considered as a necessity why not sex education which helps in understanding ones biological health which leads to a lifetime of good sexual health. Sex education is a necessity and should be provided and supported at schools for the betterment of the future generation.
